SixApart: Sr. Sys Admin/Ops Eng -TypePad

Six Apart (http://www.sixapart.com/), the company behind LiveJournal, Movable Type and TypePad, is looking for excellent system administators to help us grow our services. Six Apart Operations is responsible for the health, uptime and performance of our production infrastructure including applications, databases, systems, networks and storage.

Responsibilities

• Proactive monitoring of Six Apart services.
• Work closely with Engineering, QA and vendors on deployment, rollback, etc.
• Aggressively automate to increase quality and and scale. Develop and document repeatable operational procedures.
• Participate in the on-call pager rotation along with all other members of the team.
• Plan and execute routine maintenance while minimizing riskand application downtime.
• Plan and execute capacity and capabilities growth. Assist with planning the overall strategy for the Operations team

Required Experience and Skills

• Passion and drive for operational excellence. Very strong sense of responsibility and commitment.
• Significant (2-10 years) experience operating a large-scale 7x24 web environment.
• Extensive Unix systems administration and automation experience.
• Knowledge of Apache web servers, Unix shell scripting and Perl.
• 2+ years experience with Linux
• Extensive understanding of web application development and architecture
• Excellent debugging and troubleshooting skills
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills
• Demonstrated willingness and ability to work in a
• BS or MS in Computer Science or similar discipline, or equivalent experience

Preferred Experience

• While not required, we prefer candidates with as much of the following background as possible.
• Experience with site monitoring (Nagios, Sitescope etc) and performance measuring tools.
• Experience with CVS and Subversion.
• Experience with Build or Release Engineering.
• Experience with database administration, SQL, MySQL and Postgres.
